Fighter Pilots International Exchange Programs

By Ed 8 Comments

Whether you went to college or not, you know that some high schools and universities offer exchange programs that let students learn about new languages and cultures.

If you’re thinking about becoming a fighter pilot, then maybe you’re worrying about not getting the opportunity.

Not true! And I don’t just mean getting stationed overseas. That could be a given, depending on the fighter jet you’re assigned to and the military’s needs.

But we as fighter pilots also get to spend time with Allied squadrons.

And you know what, it really is cool. I’m as patriotic as the next guy, but in the fraternity of fighter pilots you realize that it takes a lot of skill and a lot of determination to get behind the stick.

Whether they’re Aussie, Canadian or British, they went through the same training you did, or near enough.

As you can see in the video below, there are also different things that you can pick up about other cultures just through your comrades in flight. You’ll see my take on the Australians below:

So if you’re looking to see how you can broaden your horizons, don’t think that training to become a fighter pilot will do anything but open doors for you. Even if you want to learn about new cultures, you can find a billet that can satisfy your needs… if you work hard enough at it.

Alright, club members, it’s on your shoulders.

If you could pick one country to do an exchange with once you got your wings pinned on, where would you want to be sent and why?

I would choose France. I visited Paris and Normandy back in January of 2009 with my graduating class at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. and we were there for 11 days I believe. I really enjoyed the culture over there. So much history has taken place in France and I am a huge fan of history (especially European history). I would enjoy an extended stay over there for sure.

I would choose Colombia because my mom is Colombian and her side of the family currently lives in Colombia. I am fluent in spanish and I would enjoy doing anything to help out the country of Colombia deal with any issues that may come up with Venezuela and even Cuba.
